Witchblade Vol. 1-4
puckett!
02/28/2008

Rather than go through the various episodes of the series that have been imported to America, I thought I'd discuss the quality of the first several volumes of the Witchblade series.

One thing I do appreciate about this series is the fact its a completely new cast but in continuity. Set in a future where there is a new bearer of the fabled Witchblade gauntlet, Top Cow assures us that the main comic book storylines are still canon (along with the manga series which features a third cast and still manages to be canon).

It's different... but it's still EXTREMELY respectful, unlike EVERY Spider-Man or X-Men reboot when they cross media.

Sadly, it's hard for me to stay consistantly excited about all of these versions. This one, set in a future where things are bleak and evil mutants seem to be everywhere, we find a single mother who suffers from memory loss and must constistantly fight to keep her daughter, despite the fact she's a danger. Sadly, the Child Welfare Group that wants to take her child is probably worse...

Design wise... I'm not a big fan of Gonzo, the animation studio. Often the characters aren't well composed. Many character have strange posture for the sake of showing off strangely large breasts. This is a very common problem. We get it... the chick has large breasts... it's not neccessary to make characters constantly contort to make it obvious.

It's almost as bad as the actual comic book. Ha.

The storylines feel rather generic, but the energy in the action scenes tries to make up for it. Oddly, the fight scenes are good, but it's just so boring waiting for them to happen.

It's just hard to get behind this series. The poorly constructed characters and plots just don't make it worth it.

Score: 5 (of ten)
