Interview with The Amazing Spider-Girl's Tom DeFalco
07/30/2006
Spider-Girl may have just ended… but in October Spider-Man’s daughter gets a second chance… or eighth depending on who you ask: The Amazing Spider-girl. The title has been plagued by cancellations for years… and every time the fans find a way to save it. Well, We had the chance to talk to writer Tom DeFalco about the relaunch, his future plans, and pretty much everything Spider-Girl. So, Spider-Girl #100 ends and Amazing Spider-Girl #1 follows quickly after with a proper push from Marvel... Ed McGuiness variants... press posters... Are you excited that this launch is a priority over at The House of Ideas? Let me just say-- ![]() Spider-Girl has always been blessed with the greatest, most dedicated fans in all of comicdom and that includes the gang at Marvel! I hope everyone who has ever loved superhero comics will take a quick peak at Amazing Spider-Girl #1. They may discover that they're still in love! Are you surprised--especially considering it's been such a long time with little support besides lots of kind words at conventions? Marvel in general--and Joe Quesada in particular--have always supported Spider-Girl. We never would have reached 100 issues without some help from Mighty Marvel. ![]() True. Why 'Amazing'? Sure, it's got that flagship appeal ... but could she not been sensational, spectacular... Even 'MayDay Parker: Spider-Girl?' I suppose Marvel could have used a different adjective, but I think Amazing is just cool! Previously it was said that you had been writing Spider-Girl like every sixth issue could be the last... does the relaunch allow for more stability? Can you plan any further ahead not fearing cancellation or a mid-story-arc finale? I think part of our creative team's magic is the fact that we're constantly struggling to survive. We're always trying to do better and hook new readers. Unlike some books, we can't afford to take it easy for a few issues. Every issue of Spider-Girl has to count! Now, you have written almost every issue of the first series, in fact all but #51, and almost all of Spider-Girl's other appearances... in a way, Spider-Girl is your baby. It's rare a writer has a stint like that on a character he created (save, Bendis' Ultimate Spider-Man, which is debatable) at the big two... would Spider-Girl end if one day you decided you were out of stories to tell? Gosh, it never even occurred to me that I'd eventually run out of stories. Why did you bring it up? What have you heard? Is it finally time to pull out that old McDonald's application?
Are there any new writers you would hope might follow in your footsteps, heaven forbid, you stepped down? There are hundreds of very talented writers who could easily replace, but let's keep that a secret for now.
While it wasn't so much the case later in the original run, the first years of Spider-Girl sort of aligned career rise with Amazing Spider-Man, May and her father both met flying villians around the same time... electric villians around the same time... will this title follow the formula of any of Spider-Man's other titles, like the old Spectacular Spider-Man? I didn't realize I [was] following a formula the first time and definitely won't be following one when Amazing Spider-Girl #1 comes out on October. What's the plan after the first issue? Returning villains? New ones? How does May's first six months back look? They look pretty good from where Ron, Sal and I are sitting, but you'll have to judge for yourselves when the books finally come out. We'll see some old villains, some new ones...some old members of the supporting cast, some new one[s]... some old conflicts and plenty of new ones. We're treating Amazing Spider-Girl #1 as the first day of Mayday's new life and we're going to make this issue accessible to everyone. It doesn't matter if you've heard [or] read a Spider-Girl or Spider-Man comic before, you will be able understand what's going on in Amazing Spider-Girl #1. Hopefully, you'll enjoy it, too!
Last question... after the response to Last Planet Standing and the other more recent MC2 projects... could MC2 maybe get another shot? I believe that question will have to wait until the next issue of Diamond's Previews. |
